Functional Nutrition in Taree
Nutritionist Alison Hoy teaches her patients that what we eat is one of the fundamental pillars of health. Nutrition affects more than just digestion; it can play a role in various disease conditions and potentially lead to issues within our bodies at certain stages.
The Benefits of Functional Nutrition
Functional nutrition has many benefits, ranging from weight management to improved energy levels and overall wellbeing. By adjusting macronutrient and micronutrient intake, identifying potential deficiencies, and offering healthier dietary alternatives, functional nutrition aims to bring your body into balance. Patients may enjoy better sleep, enhanced libido, and better management of symptoms of chronic conditions like diabetes, and digestive issues.
Preventative and Natural Therapies
Unlike dieticians, who focus more on calorie counting, our service is different, looking more at the quality of the food patients eat. Alison focuses on gut health and how that links to everything else in the body.
Almost everything the body needs comes from the food we eat. For example, the only way to get essential nutrients like amino acids and fatty acids is from food. The body needs them to build everything – muscles, tissues, hormones, neurotransmitters, everything – and they must be digested and absorbed through the gut.
Gastrointestinal dysfunction can lead to inflammation or disruptions in gut bacteria, affecting proper digestion and preventing the body from receiving adequate nutrition for its requirements.
Alison works with her patients to address these issues using a whole foods “Paleo style” diet as a foundation. Depending on their needs, she may tailor the recommendations or use a more restrictive elimination diet approach for a short period if necessary. She’ll work with you to find the best solutions for your body’s needs.
First Visit: What to Expect
The initial consultation runs about an hour and is conducted via Zoom, allowing for convenience and flexibility. During the session, Alison will review your submitted forms, including your diet diary, to discuss your health goals, dietary patterns, and any specific health concerns. You’ll also be asked about the desired outcomes from this and future sessions.
Alison will review existing bloodwork and may request additional tests to look at particular nutrients. A diet diary allows for analysis before recommending supplements and giving personalised nutrition advice.

How many sessions will I need?
Do I have to follow a strict diet?
If you are looking for general health advice, weight loss and implementing a healthier relationship with food, then No.
Generally, short-term meal plans are more of a bandage solution, similar to a short-term weight loss program. Instead, Alison wants patients to make slow and steady gradual changes that become habitual and more of a lifestyle change. She offers recipe ideas and guidance as opposed to rigid meal plans.
